Dorm 101 - Lighting

Safety First!  Many colleges do not allow halogen lighting of any kind.  Make sure you check in with your Residence Life contacts and your Student Handbook to make sure your lighting choices adhere to their guidelines!

There's a lighting solution for every taste, style and need.

There are four types of lighting to consider when thinking about your dorm room:

Overall Light– Your ceiling fixture is going to give you light, but it will be hard to control.  Give yourself some area lighting with a floor lamp.  They are available in a variety of shapes, styles, and colors, and are often dimmable.

Desk – No study area is complete without proper lighting. The light level is important, because nothing brings a night of hard-core studying to a screeching halt like a headache from too much squinting.  Try to choose a light that’s adjustable, so you can direct the light where you need it to go (your books) and not where you don’t (your sleeping roommate’s bed.)

Reading – This might sound like another term for "desk lamp", but some folks like a little study/reading time away from their desk.  A nice, comfy chair or beanbag; maybe a futon or couch.  A reading lamp can be a part of a floor lamp, or a separate lamp you can clamp on a table, bookcase, or headboard.

Atmopheric – These lights may not serve a specific function, but might just be cool, colorful, or funky.  The Christmas lights you string around the underside of your loft may look awesome, but they also shed just enough light that you don’t stumble and wake up your roommate coming back from a late night. These can also be lava lamps, black lights, or even flameless candles.

Dorm 101 - Furniture

So you're heading off to college.  Your first new place!  It's an amazing adventure, and here are a few hints to make your new place a better home-away-from-home.

1.)  Loft your bed!  - Floor space is at a premium, plus you're probably sharing with someone else.  Making good use of vertical space will go a long way to making your dorm room more livable.  Raising your bed up will open up a great space for your desk, giving you a study "nook" that will help you keep focus.  More of a library studier?  The space under your loft is a great place for extra seating -- a futon, beanbag, extra chairs -- "social" studies are important, too.

2.) Speaking of desks, you're going to want to have a study space you like (or at least can stand.)  Make sure you've got plenty of room to spread out, and also consider investing in a desk lamp.  It will help with eye strain, and be less of a disturbance to your roommate if you have to pull an all-nighter.  If your space is small, store your textbooks and other materials on shelves or in bins -- nearby, but not on the desk itself.  Don't forget a comfortable chair as well!

3.) Additional seating will do a lot to increase your dorm room comfort.  Having an additional lounging chair for long bouts of reading (or movie marathons) is a good plan.  Investing in a futon, or other convertible bed option, will give you a place to lounge and a place for friends to spend the night.  Many stores offer pieces that do double-duty:  serving as a table, but also as a chair.  Folding/stacking stools and chairs are another good solution when space is tight.

Dorm 101 - Textiles

Bedding
One of the easiest ways to bring a little bit of “home” to school is to make sure your bed is as comfy and inviting in your dorm as in your bedroom at home.  This is also a great place to get to show a little bit of your own style and tastes!  Many stores offer “bed-in-a-bag” solutions that have everything you could need to outfit your bed (and sometimes a little more!)  Another great option is a duvet cover.  Just stuff your existing quilt into a cover (sort of like an oversized pillow case) and you’re good to go!  Want another look?  Just slide the quilt out and change your look.  It’s easier to wash, since the cover is less bulky.

Rugs
A rug isn’t just a great way to liven up a “blah” dorm floor, it’s also a great way to bring comfort and style to the room.  Rugs come in all shapes, sizes, thicknesses, and colors so there is sure to be one that fits your needs, your tastes, and your budget.  Do you have a color scheme in mind for your room’s “look”?  Your rug can have all of them, or just some of them.  Also remember that lighter colors show dirt, so if you’re not a big fan of vacuuming – you may want to go with a medium/neutral shade.  If you’re not picking a rug for the whole room, select a few smaller rugs for targeted comfort:  one just inside the door may catch and stop dirt from getting tracked in and  a small rug next to your bed will prevent the early morning cold-foot shock in cooler months.

Throw Pillows/Cushions
A small detail that can add so much!  A throw pillow here or there can add a pop of color, but can also double as a quick seating solution if you've got more friends over than chairs.  They are generally inexpensive, and can also be one of the easiest “Do It Yourself” projects if you want to make one of your own.

Curtains
Regardless of when your first class of the day is – the sun will try to wake you when it rises.  Any barriers you place between its dazzling rays and your tired eyes will be welcome.  Plus, it can dress up dull and drab dorm room in a jiffy.  Don’t know how to sew?  No big deal!  Some stores have iron-on hemming tape available.  Cut to length, fold and iron – and you’re done!

Whatever look you’re going for in your dorm room: textiles are a quick, easy, and affordable way to make it your own, and make it your home.

Dorm 101 - Cooking and Eating

It’s one of the most classic complaints of Dorm Life: the food.  Cafeteria food is something you may just have to learn to stomach, unless you want to whittle your work study dollars away ordering pizza every night. (And yes, your roommate is going to notice that their snack stash is getting low.)

Not a lot of time before morning class?
fry pan can be your best friend.
Most dorms have strict limits on the types of appliances/electronics you’re allowed to have in your dorm room.  If you keep your dorm fridge nicely stocked with veggies and salad dressings, you’ve got a quick and healthy meal ready.  A hot pot can be great for coffee or hot cocoa on a chilly winter night – but can also whip up a speedy batch of ramen noodles for an extra burst of study energy!  Your dorm may have a shared kitchen with the basics: oven, stovetop, and microwave.  Getting in there once a week and cooking up a big batch of soup, stir fry, or even macaroni and cheese can help you make it through some cafeteria “lean times.”

Having good tools available for your kitchen adventures is also a necessity.  A good fry pan or wok, pot, spatula, colander, and sharp knife will get you far.

…Just think about how good your next home-cooked meal will taste.  Enjoy it while you have it!

A great, affordable set of storage containers
(make sure they're BPA free!) can give your
snacks and leftovers a longer shelf life.

A multi-use gem!  A wok can help you
cook everything from fried eggs to
stir frys to soups!

Dorm 101 - Organization

Organization might be the least fun part of moving in to a new space...but it doesn’t have to be!  By choosing pieces that are functional (and maybe even fashionable!) you can keep clutter under control, and make your dorm room a real Home Away from Home.

Invest in a laundry hamper to keep your clothes contained and easy to transport, whether you’re doing laundry in the dorm or back at home!  A hamper with more than one section can also keep everything sorted – handles make it easy to carry!

Invest in slim hangers.  The narrower the hanger, the more you will be able to fit in your closet.  Don’t need more hanging storage, but is your dresser out of control?  Pick up some hanging shelves for sweaters, jeans, etc.  Use the same solution for extra shoes to keep your closet/dorm room floor free of clutter.

Pick up an over-door hook or organizer for your closet.  There’s a lot of vertical storage space waiting to be used!

Don’t forget about under your bed!  If you haven’t lofted your bed (highly recommended!) put that space to use for your out-of-season clothes, extra bedding, suitcases – anything you won’t be using frequently.

No room for a file cabinet? No worries, magazine files can keep your class papers close at hand but out of sight!

Smaller storage boxes keep your pens, pencils, highlighters, etc. Tucked away.  Visual clutter makes a space feel less calm -- something you don't need during a late-night study session!

A small shelving unit can keep everything from library books to game controllers close at hand.  Add a basket or two and keep them tucked away from view.

Make your TV stand work for you!  A cabinet that’s low to the ground, for good TV viewing or game playing, and also has storage is a winning combination.

Meet our New Veggie Balls!

Food is on everyone’s mind right now. Social media is bursting with tasty recipes and photos; chefs have become household names; and cooking shows are more popular than ever. All of this is inspiring us to be more aware of what we put into our bodies, and how it effects the environment around us.

At IKEA, we want to make sure there is something on the menu for everyone; offering appetizing food that is not only good for health and well-being, but also good for the planet and produced in a responsible manner, based on the IKEA People and Planet Positive strategy.

“We will continue to serve delicious food, offering a taste of Sweden at affordable prices, but with increasing focus on the aspects of food that are really important to people: health and sustainability.” – Michael La Cour, Managing Director of IKEA Food Services AB.

The veggie ball is packed with fresh ingredients like peas, carrots, bell peppers, corn and kale, as well as healthy levels of vitamins and proteins.  With its rich taste and lower environmental impact, the veggie ball is a delicious alternative to the traditional meatball, which has made millions of IKEA customers happy – and full- throughout the years.

Next time you visit, give them a try! They are Gluten-Free and Vegan!
